This small Central American country boasts the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, the famous Blue Hole, three of the four true atolls in this hemisphere, rainforests, jungles, exotic animals of all kinds, Mayan ruins, great hiking, rafting, waterfalls, caving and many other adventure activities.
Strongly pro-environment and eco-sensitive, Belizeans go to great lengths to conserve the country’s native beauty. You won’t find strip malls, superhighways and fast-food joints, but you will find world-class diving, nature preserves that occupy over one-fifth of the country’s territory, and an unhurried, laid-back paradise that sets the perfect stage for a relaxing or adventurous vacation.
Belize’s most popular diving destinations are located offshore, and are reached by boat or an island-hopper plane from the mainland. The “big island” island of Ambergris Caye (pronounced “key”), the atolls of Lighthouse, Turneffe, Glover’s, and the southern mainland areas all provide a superior opportunity for water sports of all kinds including SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating, sailing, sailboarding, and sea kayaking. Of these, Ambergris is the most “developed”, while on the atolls your hotel’s cabanas may be the only structures on the island.
Belize’s official language is English, although Belizian Creole and Spanish are widely spoken. The population is a mix of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and Eastern Indian. Belizians have a reputation as being extremely friendly.
